Background:

Dr. Mark J. Spoonamore, M.D. serves as Medical Director of the USC Center for Spinal Surgery at Keck Hospital of USC and Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Spoonamore received his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, after completing his undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Spoonamore completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, one of the nation's top-rated orthopaedic training programs. He completed a fellowship in Spinal Surgery at the University of Southern California Medical Center and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Spoonamore continues to specialize in minimally invasive spine surgery and complex revision spine surgery, including spine tumors, spine trauma, and spinal deformity (scoliosis/kyphosis) surgery. Dr. Spoonamore also has a significant interest in pediatric spinal disorders. He was involved in numerous scoliosis research projects while at the University of Iowa, one of which received the prestigious Russell Hibbs Award at the 1998 Scoliosis Research Society meeting. Other research interests include spinal cord injuries and bone biology. He is a member of the North American Spine Society, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and is a reviewer for Spine (journal).
