Background:

Dr. Michael J. Patzakis is professor and chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, the largest orthopaedic department in the United States. He is the chief of orthopaedic surgery service at Keck Hospital of USC and holds the Vincent and Julia Meyer Chair.

He is highly recognized for his clinical expertise in orthopaedic infections, osteomyelitis and septic arthritis. Dr. Patzakis has published over 150 abstracts, papers and book chapters. He has also taught and lectured throughout the United States and in Europe. He has been a visiting professor at many national and international medical schools, and since becoming chairman, over 179 residents have graduated and/or completed their training.

Dr. Patzakis is associate editor of Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research. He is also a reviewer for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma and Journal of Orthopaedic Research. He was chairman of Infections Committee and the Council on Research and Scientific Affairs at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons from 2001-2003, and has served in leadership positions for numerous professional organizations.
