Background:
After first attending medical school in Pakistan, Dr. Akmal moved to the United Kingdom for his residencies. During his experience in the UK, Dr. Akmal was able to expand his medical knowledge in such topics as internal medicine, general surgery, nephrology and neurology by having residencies at a number of hospitals throughout England. Since beginning his fellowships in the United States, first at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati followed by LAC+USC Medical Center, Dr. Akmal has specialized in Nephrology and become one of the Keck School’s biggest assets to the field. Since first becoming an instructor here in 1978, Dr. Akmal has held a number of academic appointments, rising to the position of full professor in 1993. In addition to his several administrative appointments, Dr. Akmal has been the director of the DaVita/USC Kidney Center since 1997, further exemplifying his status as one of the leaders in the field of Nephrology.
