Background:

Dr. Charlton comes to USC from New York. After attending Columbia University medical school, he remained in New York for orthopaedic residency at St. Luke’s / Roosevelt Medical Center and fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery. While in New York, he worked very closely with Dr. William Hamilton, surgeon of the ballet companies of the New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theater. It was here where Dr. Charlton fostered his interest in dance medicine and injuries specific to professional ballet dancers. He began his career in the United States Navy, where he was stationed in Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Connecticut. In the navy, Dr. Charlton received numerous awards for safety and patient care. At the end of his navy career, Dr. Charlton was the head team physician for the teams of the United States Coast Guard Academy. Now at USC, Dr. Charlton specializes in surgery of the foot and ankle. His interests in foot and ankle surgery include minimally invasive Achilles tendon repair, where the incision of repair is reduced to approximately 1 inch. He also has expertise in arthroscopic surgery of the ankle, with particular attention to cartilage injuries of the ankle. He specializes in reconstruction of the forefoot, such as hallux valgus (bunions), as well as reconstruction of the hindfoot (flatfoot deformity). Dr. Charlton also specializes in the most severe forms of trauma to the lower extremity.  He is an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, and is on the active teaching faculty.  Working side by side with Dr. David Thordarson and Dr. Jackson Lee, this team of national leaders in trauma surgery sees the most severe fractures of the calcaneus, talus, ankle and lower extremity. Dr. Charlton is a board certified member of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons.  He is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science.  He is on the board of reviewers for the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.  He had shared his expertise with numerous media outlets including NBC News, the Los Angeles Times, and USA Today.
