Background:
Dr. Heck is the Director of the USC Comprehensive Epilepsy Program, and serves as Chief Operating Officer of the USC Neurologists, Inc. private academic practice. She is board certified in neurology, with subspecialty training in epilepsy.
A native of the Los Angeles area, she completed B.S. and C.Ph.D. degrees at UCLA before graduating with an M.D. from University of Southern California School of Medicine. She then completed internship in internal medicine at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles, and residency in neurology at the Los Angeles County USC Medical Center.
During her fellowship in epilepsy at USC, she was co-PI on the EO5 VNS trial, gaining experience in the first device for epilepsy. She continues to care for epilepsy patients with surgical and novel approaches, including but not limited to gamma knife radiosurgery, and responsive neurostimulation.
In 2005, she completed the Master of Medical Management degree at the USC Marshall School of Business, and continues to participate in a variety of leadership and lobbying roles as a graduate of the AAN Palatucci Advocacy Forum. She volunteers as Board member and Professional Advisor to the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles, and Keith’s House Foundation.
Areas of interest include innovations in the treatment of epilepsy, neuronal injury in a variety of seizure types as well as status epilepticus, the treatment of memory dysfunction in epilepsy, and the psychosocial impact of epilepsy on patients and their families. She has been interested in the development and optimization of devices for epilepsy since her fellowship in 1995 and has been a full-time faculty member of the USC Keck School of Medicine since that time.
