The Department of Psychiatry & the Behavioral Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California is searching for an executive vice chair and professor. The executive vice chair will assist the chair and provide leadership in administrative departmental matters, with an emphasis in clinical programs oversight.
The candidate must have an established track record of administrative and clinical leadership and must demonstrate academic and research achievements sufficient to be considered for the rank of Professor.
The executive vice chair will join and assist in leading a department marked by growth and distinction. The 46 department faculty provide inpatient, outpatient, consult/liaison, and emergency care services, including a strong pediatric/adolescent division, at seven public and private facilities across Los Angeles. In 2008, the 600-bed Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center opened, featuring one of the two largest-volume psychiatric emergency units in the United States. In 2009, USC purchased from Tenet Healthcare the private USC University and USC Norris Cancer Hospitals, comprising 471 beds, and representing a growth opportunity for the department.
In 2009, both the general psychiatry four-year residency (12 residents/year) and child/adolescent two-year fellowship (6 fellows/year) programs were awarded the highest five-year accreditation from the ACGME. The department also features a distinguished forensic psychiatry fellowship program, enrolling three fellows per year.
Extramurally-funded research has grown tremendously since the 2006 arrival of new chair Dr. Carlos Pato and the establishment of the Center for Genomic Psychiatry, directed by Dr. Michele Pato. Total departmental grant funding has risen to nearly $35 million. This includes a remarkable $10.7 million just awarded to department faculty through the federal stimulus American Recovery & Reinvestment Act.
The executive vice chair is expected to contribute to and help lead the continued growth of the department into the highest ranks of psychiatry programs nationally. Nominations and applications for this position will be considered as they are received. Interested applicants should send their CVs to pato@usc.edu. Carlos N. Pato, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair, Department of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences.
